DHS * USA - Napolitano brings border-state views to Homeland Security

Nogales,AZ,USA -Pacific Shipper, by ARI NATTER -December 8, 2008: -- The city of Nogales, Arizona’s busiest international border crossing, holds an important clue to Janet Napolitano’s views on the balance between trade and security... Nearly 300,000 trucks crossed the border last year at Nogales, where congestion at the Mariposa port of entry can back up for hours during produce season. That congestion is being eased by two truck-only FAST lanes added in 2006. What’s more, $13 million in federal funding will build a new port of entry with additional truck lanes... State business leaders give Arizona’s governor, President-elect Obama’s choice to run the Department of Homeland Security, much credit for making that happen... As governor of a border state, shippers say Napolitano is likely to grasp the importance of balancing security concerns with the need to keep international trade flowing smoothly... If confirmed next year as expected, Napolitano, a former U.S. attorney and state attorney general, will head a department with more than a dozen, often disparate components, including the U.S. Coast Guard, Transportation Security Administration, U.S. Customs and Border Protection and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the Secret Service.
