St. Thomas truck plant gets chop from Daimler

Toronto,Ontario, Canada -The Toronto Star, by Tony Van Alphen -15 Oct 2008: -- The economic storm engulfing North America will sweep away more of Ontario's key auto industry next year when Daimler closes its heavy-truck operation in St. Thomas and eliminates more than 1,300 jobs... Germany-based Daimler, the world's biggest maker of medium and heavy-duty trucks, said the closures are a "decisive" response to the continuing slump in the sector across the continent for more than a year. While dropping the Sterling badge, the company will retain its Freightliner and Western Star brands... The reduction in output and next year's closing will also affect several thousand workers in the region who provide parts and services... Union officials also noted it is more than coincidence that Daimler is closing the St. Thomas plant and opening a new operation in Saltillo, Mexico, a month earlier... Sterling workers in St. Thomas receive an average of about $25 an hour, while employees at the new Mexican plant would earn between $2.50 and $4... Daimler plans to shut down the plant when the current contract with the CAW expires, but David Elliott, president of Canadian Auto Workers Local 1001, said the union will fight to keep it open rather than negotiate a "close-out" agreement... He also called on the federal government to take trade action against major companies who sell in Canada without producing here... In the last month, Simmons Canada, Deere & Co. and Volvo Group have announced manufacturing plant shutdowns in southern Ontario and consolidated production in the U.S. and Mexico... Ford, the other major manufacturer in St. Thomas, is currently operating only one shift at its local assembly plant, with hundreds of workers on layoff... The CAW and workers say the Ford plant remains on shaky ground because of a continuing deterioration in the large car market... Magna International also recently cut 400 jobs at its Formet Industries auto parts plant in the city...
