House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., said Monday she would call upon committee chairs to hold hearings relevant to the stimulus package, which could cost as much as $300 billion and will include billions for infrastructure spending... "To get our economy back to health, Congress needs to consider further action," House Majority Leader, Steny Hoyer, D-Md., told reporters Monday. "In many ways, this is the economic challenge of a lifetime"...
* New Jersey toll increases will subsidize mass transit rail
NJ,USA -Land Line Magazine -October 13, 2008: -- Truckers and other highway users who pay tolls on the New Jersey Turnpike and Garden State Parkway will subsidize a mass transit rail tunnel... Following a public hearing on Friday, Oct. 10, the New Jersey Turnpike Authority’s Board of Directors voted to more than double the toll rates on the turnpike and parkway by 2012 to pay for a capital plan that includes $1.25 billion for the Hudson River tunnel to New York City... "A disappointing and sad day for highway users and truckers", OOIDA Director of Legislative Affairs, Mike Joyce said when he described the situation on Friday afternoon... Joyce said it’s difficult to say which is worse – a steep toll increase in tough economic times for truckers or the diversion of toll revenue for other purposes...
