Transporters Troubles * Kenya - Want minister sent to jail over axle rule
Nairobi,Kenya -The Daily Nation, by MATHIAS RINGA -October 4 2008: -- Transport minister Ali Chirau Mwakwere should be committed to jail for allegedly failing to honour a High Court order compelling him to stop the implementation of the three axle rule, transporters demanded on Saturday... The Kenya Transport Association vice-chairman, Mr Kiprop Bundotich, said transporters would push for the minister’s arrest for allegedly defying a court order barring him from enforcing the rule... But the minister said he had not seen the court order, adding that about 70 per cent of the transporters had complied... On Thursday the High Court in Nairobi stopped the minister from implementing the rule until a case filed by transport companies was heard and determined... A spot check by the Sunday Nation established that police in Mariakani were barring trucks which had not complied with the rule from transporting cargo to upcountry destinations... Many trucks which had not complied with the rule were parked on road reserves along Mariakani, Jomvu, Changamwe and Miritini... Police began enforcing the law on Wednesday following a presidential directive in August calling on transporters to reduce their truck axles from four to three by September 30...
