* China - SAIC mulls shifting truck assets to Shanghai Diesel
Shanghai,China -Reuters, by Fang Yan -Sep 12, 2008: -- SAIC Motor, China's largest automaker, is considering shifting its commercial vehicle assets to Shanghai Diesel Engine, which it is in the process of taking over, a source familiar with the situation said on Friday... Proposal, still in the early stages of review, would follow a planned hiving off of the SAIC group's auto parts business to another unit in an 8.8 billion yuan ($1.29 billion) deal, as it strives to build SAIC Motor's passenger car business into a world-class competitor... The move would involve an issue of new shares by Shanghai Diesel Engine to SAIC Motor in exchange for control of heavy-duty truck maker SAIC-Iveco Hongyan Commercial Vehicle Co and other assets, the source toldReuters...
* Sweden - Volvo to ready 14 trucks for DME biofuel
Stockholm,Sweden -UPI -Sept. 12, 2008: -- Swedish automaker Volvo said it would develop 14 prototype trucks to run on a biofuel by-product of the paper and pulp industry... The substance known as black liquor or DME has been used as an aerosol propellant for decades, Swedish newspaper The Local reported Friday... DME is considered non-carcinogenic, non-mutagenic and non-toxic, The Local said. It also produces "ultra-low exhaust emissions," the newspaper said... Volvo said it could have the prototype trucks ready within 18 months...
