TRUCKMAKERS' NEWS * USA - Heavy Trucks For Better Fuel Efficiency
USA -Mack Trucks -1 September, 2008: -- In order to increase the fuel efficiency of heavy trucks, They evaluating a number of patent-pending inventions installed on class 8 tractor trailer trucks to reduce aerodynamic drag. There are several areas on these big rigs that create airflow problems, making them less aerodynamic and thus decreasing their overall fuel efficiency. Engineers are using CFD technology coupled with Tecplot visualization capabilities to design, evaluate, and refine the effectiveness of several drag reduction devices... To ensure an accurate assessment of these devices, it was imperative that the CFD effort was performed on a realistic tractor trailer geometry. To address this critical requirement, the SOLUS team worked with partner Old Dominion University (ODU) and Great Dane Trailers to redesign a Department of Energy CAD model and add more realism to it. Kendrick Cary, a grad student at ODU, added wheel wells, tractor roof and side fairings, fifth wheel details, undercarriage structures, mirrors, beams, a c-channel along the top edge of the trailer box, brake and suspension components, landing gear used to prop up the trailer when it’s unhitched from the truck, axles, and mud flaps to clutter up the model and make it more realistic. Hunter adds that they made the model as realistic as possible because, “If the trucking industry doesn’t buy into it, then they won’t really believe the results even if they are good results”...
