SAFETY * USA - Trucker says safety is king of the road

Mount Holly,NJ,USA -The Gaston Gazette, by Amanda Millard -September 18, 2008: -- Phil Peterson drives for FedEx National LTL in Charlotte picking up and delivering packages... Peterson first had to try out for the competition. Drivers must have a clean driving record with no accidents or tickets... Peterson has been trucking 25 years and racked up 600,000 accident-free miles... His win brought him to the National Truck Driving Championship in Houston where he placed 16th out of 50 drivers... Drivers gain points in four areas: A written exam that tests trucking knowledge; a personal interview that measures truckers' attitudes toward the industry; a pre-trip inspection where drivers have to find defects on a truck; and field course where drivers make difficult maneuvers they might face in real life... Those who want to get into the trucking business need to take safety seriously, Peterson said...
