Washington,DC,USA -Transport Topics -5 Sept 2008: -- The Highway Trust Fund needs an $8 billion transfusion from the U.S. Treasury’s general fund in order to avoid an imminent deficit, Transportation Secretary Mary Peters said Friday during a conference call... Without the move, which would require congressional approval, the fund could run dry “as soon as this month,” Peters said... The highway trust fund had been projected to run into deficit by the end of the 2009 fiscal year, but Peters said reductions in vehicle miles traveled, and the subsequent dwindling of fuel-tax receipts, have sharply reduced federal income for infrastructure projects... * Louisiana, Mississippi Get $4 Million for Emergency Repairs
Washington,DC,USA -Transport Topics -5 Sept 2008: -- The federal government will provide $4 million in emergency relief funds to Louisiana and Mississippi to help repair roads and bridges damaged by floods caused by Hurricane Gustav, U.S. Transportation Secretary Mary Peters said Friday... The Federal Highway Administration's emergency relief program provides funds to states for the repair or reconstruction of federal-aid highways damaged by natural disasters or catastrophic events. Emergency relief funds are provided from the General Fund of the Treasury and not the Highway Trust Fund, DOT said...
* N.J. Turnpike Authority Calls for Toll Hikes
New Jersey,USA -AP/Transport Topics -5 Sept 2008: -- The New Jersey Turnpike Authority asked Gov. Jon Corzine (D) to approve a series of toll increases on two of the state’s major toll roads to pay for infrastructure improvements... The proposed increases on the New Jersey Turnpike and the Garden State Parkway would begin with a 60-cent hike on the average Turnpike trip in 2009, followed by a 90-cent increase three years later and a 30-cent increase in 2023, AP said.
* Highway funding back on the map in Senate committee

* Maintaining the national character of the interstate and federal highway system;
* Efficient movement of people and goods, including intermodal;
* Safety, including condition and design of infrastructure;
* Reducing congestion and its impacts;
* Sustainable funding for the Highway Trust Fund including alternatives;
* Consolidating programs substantially to refocus the program; and
* Establishing funding and performance criteria
