CARGO CRIME * Europe - Needs to do more to fight against
Cargo crime is a growing problem globally with losses from thefts estimated at $US25 billion/$50 billion a year in recent studies
Auckland,New Zealand -Stuff.co.nz/Reuters -16 September 2008: -- ... But it is difficult to tackle because crimes often occur across borders and incidents regularly go unreported... About 85 per cent of global cargo crime losses are related to trucking, with one in six truck drivers in the EU confronted with it. EU truck-related thefts led to 8.2 (NZ$18) billion euro losses in 2007 based on a report for the EU commission... Canvas cutting on parked trucks is one of the most common methods and the hardest hit industries include high-tech, pharmaceuticals, tobacco and alcohol and retail, experts said. Violence against truckers is also becoming an issue... The Transported Asset Protection Association (TAPA) said improving security at truck stops would be an important step to tackle the problem. Increased use of labelling, for example could help truckers locate safer parking areas around Europe... Industry can also counter thieves by removing brand labels from cargo, using tracing devices to monitor truck locations and increasing access controls for truck drivers at warehouses, said Rob van den Ouweland of Sony's Supply Chain Solutions Europe...
