Frankfurt,Germany -AP/The International Herald Tribune -August 12, 2008: -- Daimler AG said Tuesday that its Mercedes-Benz unit will increase production of trucks, buses and their components at a plant in Brazil, investing €600 million (US$894 million) in the facility... Daimler said the investment in the Sao Bernardo do Campo plant — to be made between 2009 and 2011 — would result in a 25 percent increase in daily capacity, as well as a modernization of production and an improvement in logistics systems... The company said in a statement that it expects jobs to be created in the expansion but did not specify how many. The facility employs 12,000 people... The expansion is aimed at meeting demand both in Brazil and in export markets... Mercedes-Benz do Brazil is Latin America's largest manufacturer of commercial vehicles. * China - Daimler, Beiqi Foton announce truck JV deal
Beijing,China -Reuters/China Trade Information - 11 Aug 2008: -- Daimler AG, the world’s leading truck manufacturer, and Beiqi Foton, a major Chinese commercial vehicle company, signed a letter of intent on a ceremony Thursday to form a 50-50 trucks joint venture, according to a company statement, cited by Reuters... Daimler will invest in terms of cash while the Chinese partner will inject its heavy truck assets into the venture... The JV is awaiting the government approval which it expects to secure in the next 12 months and, about two years after the establishment of the China JV, the two companies will possibly build another in Russia, with more to follow in developing markets such as South Asia and South America in the next three to five years...
* Germany - Mercedes is the latest to cut lead times
Stuttgart,Germany -Road Transport/Commercial Motor (UK), by David Harris -11 August 2008: -- Mercedes-Benz has cut the time it takes to deliver its heaviest trucks by four months. A year ago, the lead time for such trucks was 12 months but this has now been cut to seven or eight months in most cases, it says. This means that anybody ordering an Actros or Axor now can expect delivery by the beginning of the second quarter of 2009. For lighter commercial vehicles, delivery would be "soon"... Similarly, truck orders are a little down on this time last year, "but only a little"...
* Europe - Whole Vehicle Type Approval costs 'still unclear'
London,UK -Road Transport/Commercial Motor, by Steve Hobson -11 August 2008: -- How much the new Whole Vehicle Type Approval system will cost the transport industry when it comes into effect next April is still unclear, a seminar organised by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) has heard... The only established cost to date is the £1,785 for chassis cab, bodywork and supply chain manufacturers needing the Conformity of Production (CoP) test for type approval... From 29 April 2009, all parts required to build a HGV will need a Certificate of Conformity (CoC) - which can only be issued by suppliers with CoP. Once a manufacturer has CoP in place, it can issue CoCs, and initial costs will depend on which type-approval route it takes... According to the SMMT, 100,000 vans and trucks required bodywork last year, and it estimates there are 1,000 active UK bodybuilders. One bodywork manufacturer believes little if any cost will be passed on from Full European status, compared to National Small Series or Individual Vehicle Approval - where there is less volume to dilute costs...

Tokyo,Japan -Road Transport/Commercial Motor, by Colin Barnett -11 August 2008: -- Nissan has developed a 'smart' accelerator pedal which its tests show can improve fuel economy by 5-10%... ECO Pedal, which can be switched off, detects when pedal pressure exceeds the amount required to accelerate with optimum economy if a nagging warning light is ignored, it physically pushes the pedal back to the most favourable position. Nissan is confident that it will be available on production vehicles next year...
