Long Beach,CA,USA -The Cunningham Report -10 Aug 2008: -- The Port of Oakland may be laying off more than 60 employees and digging for dollars to cover their bills, but the port board agreed last week to kick in $5 million toward an emission-reduction retrofit program that would modify 1,000 trucks that service the port... The port estimates that there are currently more than 2,000 trucks whose main job is hauling containers to and from port terminals. Retrofitting half of those trucks is expected to cost from $15,000 to $20,000 per truck, depending on the type of truck and type of retrofit equipment needed. Since new trucks cost $100,000 or more, the same amount of money will retrofit five times as many old trucks as buy new trucks. The retrofits are expected to reduce emissions per truck by 85 percent...
