* Germany - Daimler U.S. truck plant rehires, Canada jobs go
Stuttgart,Germany -Reuters -Aug 6, 2008: -- Daimler AG will rehire 650 staff at a U.S. truck plant from next month given unexpectedly strong demand for its Cascadia model, the world's biggest truckmaker said on Wednesday... Daimler had eliminated a shift and laid off 1,500 workers at the Cleveland plant early this year amid a market downturn for heavy trucks in North America... The Cascadia heavy truck was launched last year and has sold well in North America and in export markets such as South Africa, Australia and New Zealand, the company said...

* USA - Mack Trucks Inc has reached an agreement with longtime customer Waste Management Inc that will put 120 natural gas-powered MackAE MR and LE Series trucks into service in Southern California
CAL,USA -Mack Trucks -7 August 2008: -- The first vehicle has been delivered to the Waste Management facility in El Cajon, CA, where the refuse hauler announced that it has joined forces with PG&E Corp to establish a program that will use emission reductions gained from the vehicles to pave the way for construction of a power plant in San Diego County. This is the first time that emission reductions from mobile sources have been used to offset emissions from a major stationary source... Truck will be equipped with the new 12-liter Mack Eco-Tech engine. With 325 horsepower and 1,050 ft-lb of torque at 1250 rpm, these engines feature a spark-ignited design and operate on either liquefied or compressed natural gas (LNG or CNG). In order to meet emissions requirements requested by Waste Management, the engines had to meet an Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)-certified nitrogen oxide emissions level of 2.0 grams per brake horsepower-hour, which is 20% below the EPA requirement that will go into effect in 2002... Waste Management also has the option to order a single LNG fuel tank that would be mounted to the left rail and store 150 gallons of fuel...
* China - Joint venture to manufacture trucks in
Shanghai,China -GMA News -7 August 2008: -- Daimler AG and Beiqi Foton Motor on Thursday signed an agreement to form a 50-50 joint venture to make medium and heavy-duty trucks in China and to look for opportunities to sell Foton’s Auman trucks in overseas markets... The letter-of-intent calls for the venture to use Mercedes-Benz heavy-duty engine technology and the Auman brand to build international sales of low-end commercial vehicles, Daimler said in a statement... Foton’s Auman-brand trucks include tractors, dump trucks, platform trucks and a variety of special-purpose vehicles, such as stack vehicles, cement pump trucks and cement mixers... With the new joint venture Daimler will have two commercial vehicle ventures and one passenger car venture in China...

The 12.8-litre DD13 was introduced to unsuspecting trade press editors at a Sterling Trucks event here yesterday. The six-cylinder, in-line engine will be well-suited to applications where Sterling has a strong presence, namely LTL, regional distribution and vocational markets... The engine, which will replace the MBE4000, will be available with 350 to 450 hp and 1,350 to 1,650 lb.-ft. of torque...
* USA - Isuzu Truck announces low rate financing
Mississauga,ONT,USA -Truck News, by Adam Ledlow -7 Aug 2008: -- In light of a move by certain finance companies to suspend subsidized leasing in Canada, Isuzu Commercial Truck of Canada (ICTC) has announced low-rate financing for its commercial vehicles. Most notable is a "0%" program for up to 60 months on their gas engine models. Diesel-powered model financing can be as low as 4.9% for well-qualified customers, Isuzu officials said... This is the first time that ICTC has offered such an aggressive finance program for their medium-duty trucks in Canada...
* USA - Navistar, American LaFrance Set Vocational Truck Venture
Summerville, S.C,USA -Transport Topics -7 Aug 2008: -- Truck and engine maker Navistar International Corp. said it will jointly develop and build cabover vocational trucks with American LaFrance LLC... The vehicles will have a low cab built over the engine and initially will be for the waste and construction industries, Navistar said late Wednesday... The two said they will use the American LaFrance’s manufacturing plant in Summerville, S.C., to build the trucks... American LaFrance, which makes fire trucks and traces its company roots back to 1832, exited bankruptcy in July. It operates four manufacturing facilities with over 200 dealership locations throughout North America...
