* Pacer’s 2Q Income Improves
Concord,CAL,USA -Transport Topics -6 Aug 2008: -- Transportation and third-party logistics firm Pacer International said late Tuesday its second-quarter profit rose 10.4% to $13.8 million, or 40 cents a share, from $12.5 million, or 34 cents, a year ago... Revenue for the quarter ended June 27 rose to $518.4 million, from $474.9 million last year, the company said in a statement... Logistics income from operations fell $3.4 million quarter due to excess capacity, declining prices and higher transportation, and fuel costs affecting our trucking units, Pacer said...
* Expeditors’ Second-Quarter Income Improves
Seattle,WASH,USA -Transport Topics -5 Aug 2008: -- Logistics firm Expeditors International of Washington said its second-quarter net income rose 9% to $71.3 million, or 32 cents a share, from $65.5 million, or 30 cents, a year ago... Revenue rose to $1.45 billion, from $1.26 billion, the company said Tuesday...
* Celadon’s 4Q, Full-Year Income Decline
Indianapolis,IN,USA -Transport Topics -5 Aug 2008: -- Truckload carrier Celadon Group’s fiscal fourth-quarter net income fell to $2.16 million, or 10 cents per share, from $5.15 million, or 22 cents, in the same period last year... Revenue for the quarter ended June 30 rose 17.4% to $154.6 million, while freight revenue, which excludes fuel surcharges, gained 3.5% to $116.7 million... For the full fiscal year, Celadon’s profit plunged 70.4% to $6.6 million, or 29 cents a share, from $22.3 million, or 94 cents, a year ago... Full-year revenue rose 12.6% to $565.9 million, and freight revenue gained 5.7% to $457.5 million, the company said...

* Soaring diesel costs fuel trucking job cuts
Yatesville,GA,USA -The Times Tribune, by COULTER JONES -August 6, 2008: -- Doug Barbacci watched nervously as the price of diesel started rising more than a year ago... Since then, the president of Calex Logistics has had to make tough decisions about his trucking company in northern Luzerne County. He cut more than 30 employees and sold assets because of high fuel prices, Mr. Barbacci said... The trucking company was started by Mr. Barbacci’s father-in-law in 1974. It has grown to more than 200 employees, 170 trucks and 400 trailers, and about 750,000 square feet of warehouse space... Fuel now makes up 50 percent of Calex’s costs, Mr. Barbacci said. A year ago, fuel only made up 24 percent of the company’s costs...
