MEXICANS' TRUCKS DEBATE * USA - Truck drivers praise effort to discontinue cross-border trucking
Opponents are hoping the latest legislation will end the program, which originally was set to last for one year, but on Monday the DOT announced it would extend the program for two years
Kansas City,MO,USA -The Kansas City Star -Aug. 04, 2008: -- Todd Spencer, executive vice president of the independent drivers group in Grain Valley, said he was not surprised the Bush administration extended the program... The cross-border program began last September under the supervision of the Transportation Department’s Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. Controversial from the start, a lawsuit filed last August by several groups to block the program is being considered by a federal appeals court... Congress passed a law in December seeking to cut off the pilot program’s funding, but moves by the Transportation Department and President Bush restored the funding... Earlier in the spring, Mary E. Peters, Secretary of Transportation, urged Congress to keep the cross-border project going, saying it has the support of dozens of U.S. companies, business groups and agricultural organizations... So far, 27 Mexican trucking companies with a total of 101 trucks have participated in the program and delivered goods throughout the U.S. And only 10 U.S. carriers, with a total of 52 trucks, have made shipments into Mexico, according to the Transportation Department’s Web site...
