DP World finally starts London Gateway construction

London,UK -Transport Intelligence -26 Aug 2008: -- Port development company DP World has finally commenced building what is projected to become one of Europe's largest logistics facilities on a site to the east of London, England... The Dubai-based organisation last week signed contracts with civil engineering companies Laing O'Rourke and Dredging International. The first tranche of the contract will be worth £400m, with the total cost of the project estimated at £1.5bn... 'London Gateway', as the development is called, will be located on the north bank of the Thames estuary just a few miles downstream from the existing Tilbury container terminal. It will be centred on a huge new port ultimately capable of annually handling 3.5m TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units). In addition to what will be a substantial addition to north-western Europe's port infrastructure, the facility may also offer what DP World claims will be Europe's largest logistics park...
