* Japan - Yamato Holdings looks to make home delivey more efficient

Tokyo,Japan -AsiaPulse via COMTEX/Trading Markets -Jul 18, 2008 - Yamato Holdings Co. is overhauling its methods for home delivery in a bid to slash 10 billion yen (US$93.9 million) from costs by the year ending March 2011... Over the next three years, Yamato Transport Co. will introduce 15,000 trucks with shelves that allow cargo to be sorted for each delivery area. In the past, drivers have loaded trucks so that they could personally recognize cargo when making deliveries. Installing shelves will allow part-timers to load the trucks instead, thereby reducing personnel expenses... The company also plans to increase the number of deliveries made per driver each day by 7 per cent... Personnel expenses have been swelling in Yamato's delivery business, resulting in lower operating profits over the past two fiscal years. The company is targeting 55 billion yen (US$516.3 million) in operating profit for its delivery business in the year ending March 2011, up 36 per cent from last fiscal year. It aims to generate 10 billion yen of the 15 billino yen targeted increase by improving efficiency... Yamato also expects to reduce costs by 3.5 billion yen in the year ending March 2009, and around 3 billion yen in each of the following two fiscal years...
