TRUCKMAKERS' NEWS * Sweden - Volvo truck shipments rise 15 pct in May

Stockholm,Sweden -Reuters, by Niklas Pollard; Veronica Ek; & Rory Channing) -Jun 24, 2008: -- World number two truck maker Volvo said on Tuesday truck shipments rose 15 percent year-on-year in May, boosted by higher deliveries in the U.S. and Asia while shipments in Europe were stable... In North America, Volvo's truck shipments were up 49 percent year-on-year, but in the year-ago month deliveries were hit by a sharp market contraction following a buying spree ahead of new emission rules for truck engines in the USA... Since then, sales have generally remained slow in the face of the U.S. economic slowdown, coming on the heels of the subprime mortgage crisis and credit crunch, and soaring fuel prices... In Europe, deliveries inched up 1 percent year-on-year with trucks shipments accounting for roughly half of the group's total... Fortified by its purchase last year of Japanese truck maker Nissan Diesel, deliveries in Asia rose 50 percent year-on-year in the latest month...
