Group Call * Canada - Teamsters Seek Fuel Rebates

Teamsters Canada issued an appeal Thursday for a national fuel rebate program to avoid trucking company bankruptcies because of record fuel prices

Laval, Quebec,CAN -UPI/The Post Chronicle -Jun 12, 2008: -- The group said in a statement the price of fuel has surpassed the $5.65 per gallon mark in several regions of the country and "imposes a perilous cost on trucking companies, brokers and owner-operators... In my 40 years in this business, I have never witnessed such a critical situation. It is only a matter of weeks before companies will begin to disappear," said Teamsters spokesman Robert McAulay... The group called on the Canadian government to use budget surpluses it has accumulated in recent years to assist the trucking industry with rebates. It noted the provincial government of Quebec already has a working fuel rebate program, and said that was proof a federal program would be viable... Robert Bouvier, president of Teamsters Canada, concluded the call with a warning to the federal government. "One thing is sure: current gas and fuel prices will have dire consequences for the health of Canada's economy," Bouvier said...
