FUEL COST STRIKES & PROTESTS * WORLDWIDE

* South Korea - Truckers Call for Fuel Costs Cut

Truckers went on strike across the country Friday to demand state compensation for rising fuel costs

Seoul,S. Korea -Yonhap/The Korea Times, by Bae Ji-sook -13 June 2008: -- ... The truckers are urging the government to lower diesel oil prices, to raise freight and to guarantee a minimum wage. They started a walkout in protest against the government's offer to finance half of the oil price hike that has more than doubled to 2,000 won per litter from 900 won in 2004. They complained freight has remained the same... About 35 percent of the total 13,000 members of the Korea Cargo Transport Workers' Federation (KCTWF) joined the walkout... A total of 5,700 riot police were deployed to major ports to stop strikers and non-strikers from clashing... The government also suspended the 288 won per liter oil subsidy for striking truckers... Military trucks, extra trains, individual trucks and other logistical vehicles were employed to fill in the delivery gaps... The strike is indeed affecting logistics nationwide. If the strike lasts for more than three days, the country will encounter difficulty in shipping export items on schedule, quoted an executive of Busan Container Terminal... (Yonhap - Members of the Korea Cargo Transport Workers’ Federation stages a full-scale strike over rising fuel prices in front of a container warehouse in Uiwang, Gyeonggi Province, Friday)

* Switzerland - Truckers say no to transport strikes for now

Geneve,Switzerland -Swissinfo -13 June 2008: -- Swiss truck drivers will not be striking and or forming blockades over high fuel prices, the country's commercial transport association, Astag, has announced... Following a committee meeting, Astag said in a statement on Friday that for the time being strikes were an ineffective way to address the grievances of its members... The association said it was worried by the "dramatic price explosion" of diesel fuel – currently selling for SFr2.25 ($2.15) per litre – and expressed concern over high taxes faced by the road transport sector... Astag did not rule out strikes though, noting that recent action by Swiss milk producers and rail cargo workers had prompted government intervention... The association has called for a dialogue with the federal authorities before it makes its next move...

* UK - 100 drivers in M-way fuel protest

London,UK -The Press Association -14 June 2008: -- About 100 disgruntled lorry drivers and other motorists took part in a go-slow fuel protest on the M6... Up to 80 lorries, along with vans, cars, motorbikes and a caravan, set off at 9am under police escort from Lymm Services at Warrington, Cheshire to Carnforth, 60 miles north in Lancashire... Tony Burridge, who organised the protest, said he believed the demonstration was the biggest go-slow fuel protest on the motorway since the first fuel demonstrations began in 2000... Mr Burridge, 50, a logistics manager from Preston, said: "We are hoping the strength of feeling shown during today's go-slow will persuade the Government to reduce fuel duty... I am confident that by standing together and staging this peaceful protest we can make the Government reduce fuel duty."
