TRUCKERS' PROTESTS * Canada & USA - Truckers take their woes out on the road

IT'S ABOUT RESPECT : "They treat you like a piece of garbage"

Toronto,ONT,CAN -The Toronto Sun, by BEN SPENCER -May 9, 2008: -- It had gridlock written all over it... Anyone unlucky enough to be heading east on Derry Rd. just after 10 a.m. yesterday might have been tempted to turn around or pull over and wait it out... One by one, the dump trucks pulled out into the already heavy traffic. And one by one, they honked their horns, scaring unsuspecting drivers half to death... Dump truck drivers are fed up by poor wages they say hadn't kept up with rising trucking costs and unsafe working conditions... The Ontario Dump Truck Association claims most trucks are designed for a load of 21 tonnes, but excavators, road builders and construction firms they work for routinely overload the trucks by eight or nine tonnes... For Rigoberto Arauz, the 68th dump truck driver to pull out onto Derry Rd., it is all about getting some respect... "They treat you like a piece of garbage," said the 49-year-old, who has been driving dump trucks in Ontario for the past three years. "And then if I complain I lose my job. It's just not fair, so this is what we have to do."... With 32 years in the industry, John Soloio is one of the most experienced dump truck drivers on the road... "I have seen it bad before, but this is the worst," he lamented. "Nobody wants to listen, so this is the only way to do it. We have to let them know we mean business."... * USA - Truckers’ Strike in June

ID,USA -HighBoldtage, by Michelle Costa -May 9, 2008: -- The high gas prices are really digging into everyone’s pockets, especially truck drivers. These truckers have had it and they aren’t going to take anymore... Truck drivers in our area said they’re going to be driving to Boise next month to demand lower prices... “The price of diesel fuel is killing us. Many drivers are going broke. Not making a profit,” said Montgomery... Because of this, on June 15th, truckers are getting vocal... “All of us gather together …. Drive up to Boise and circle that blooming thing. Shut it down … Don’t deliver the toilet paper. Then, they’ll pay attention,” said Montgomery...
