SAFETY * Australia - Tunnels allow unsafe cargo

Melbourne,Australia -NEWS.com, by Ian Royall -May 16, 2008: -- Road tankers loaded with diesel can be transported through Melbourne's road tunnels even though the fuel is classified as hazardous material... National rules permit bulk quantities of diesel to be carried underground... Diesel is allowed because it ignites at a higher temperature than other chemicals... It follows the heroics of a truckie who kept driving his 35,000-litre load of diesel out of the Burnley Tunnel, as flames poured from his prime mover... CityLink spokeswoman Jennifer Howard said the vehicle did not need to carry a sign indicating that it was carrying hazardous goods... An anti-truck action group said the incident highlighted the need to get trucks off the road and to transport dangerous goods by rail... "This just highlights the vast amounts of truck traffic on our roads," said Elwyn Davies, of the Maribyrnong Truck Action Group . "One thing we'd like to see is more goods being transported by rail." ...
