GREEN NEWS * USA - Port of Oakland completes $3M program replacing old trucks

The Port of Oakland reached a milestone Wednesday in its efforts to reduce diesel-engine pollution, replacing its 80th older truck with a new model

Oakland,CAL,USA -The East Bay Business Times, by David Goll -May 2, 2008: -- ... The $3 million program was designed to remove 1990 and older truck models that provide goods transport in and out of the port area with new trucks that emit far less diesel particulate matter , which contributes to air pollution and greenhouse gases that most scientists blame for global warming... On Wednesday, Omar Benjamin, the port's executive director, handed over the keys of a 2009 Kenworth truck to its new owner. Port officials say the 80 new trucks have eliminated 94 tons of nitrogen oxide and 11 tons of diesel particulate matter from the atmosphere... Those efforts include a campaign to retrofit 1,000 diesel-powered trucks that travel in and out of the port with diesel particulate matter filters. The port recently was awarded money from the California Air Resources Board to retrofit 75 trucks with such filters, which are capable of reducing particulates in engine emissions by up to 85 percent...
