TRUCKER'S STORY * Canada - Open road still appealing to senior trucker
BC,Canada -Online Pioneer Plus, by Dave Fraser -2 May 2008: -- With the ever increasing gas prices and the hazards of highway driving, an 18-wheeler certainly comes with its list of problems, but the freedom of the open road still holds sway over Joe Boomgaars... He travels quite frequently from British Columbia to Ontario and accidents average about one per trip, mostly in the mountains because people are not able to slow down fast enough. His biggest pet peeve is the bad drivers on the highways and the speeds that cars seem to reach... By the time he turned 18, he was a fully licensed driver and has been going ever since which has been 35 years... Boomgaars is a owner operator and has been doing a lot of work for CRS or Choice Reefer Systems, out of Belleville... With trucks costing around $150,000 and a trailer $60-65,000 it can be a risky thing to own your own rig in today's economy. As well there is a lot more restrictions on independent drivers and fines can be high... "Almost every day, I wish I was in something else but I still enjoy it, couldn't see myself doing anything else right now. In three or four years, I might slow down if the rules keep changing for owner operators."...
