Watching the Road * USA - Government re-evaluates trucking program
St. Cloud,MN,USA -The St. Cloud Times, by Amy Trang -March 4, 2008: -- BobbiJo Dinesen remembers a few years ago when a vehicle kept passing Brenny Transportation and Brenny Specialized in St. Joseph. The vehicle went past about three times in 20 minutes, slowing down at the company's lot every time it passed... Employees noticed the odd occurrence and contacted the call center of Highway Watch, a national anti-terrorism program, said Dinesen, safety manager and trainer at Brenny... The program trains truck drivers to spot suspicious activity on the nation's roads and report it to a call center. The center sends reports to public safety officials and to a national analysis center, to see if patterns are developing nationwide... Because of Dinesen's call, local law enforcement dropped by Brenny and the vehicle disappeared... The Homeland Security Department's inspector general by August will issue a report assessing the need for Highway Watch, created by Congress after 9/11 as part of an effort to enlist citizens in the government's security efforts...
