* Germany - 'Full speed ahead' for Mercedes-Benz
Stuttgart,Germany -Commercial Motor (UK)/Road Transport, by Brian Weatherley -11 March 2008: -- Despite the ongoing slump in the US heavy truck market, Andreas Renschler, head of Daimler Trucks worldwide, insists: "Mercedes-Benz is steaming full-speed ahead - the three-pointed star is shining brighter than ever"... Renschler reported that Daimler-Benz's truck operation boosted its return on sales to 7.5% last year (up from 5.8% in 2006). This was in spite of the US heavy truck market, where it competes with Freightliner, Sterling and Western Star brands, falling by a whopping 41%... Daimler's truck boss, however, is in bullish form, citing the fast-growing markets in Eastern Europe (up 20%) and Latin America (up 28%) as key contributors to the truck group's recent positive results and ongoing sales growth. Daimler's biggest target markets, however, are what Renschler calls the 'BRIC' countries - Brazil, Russia, India and China - where it intends to increase business either through its own products or via joint ventures with the likes of Hero in India and Foton in China. Reasserting Daimler's position as the world's number-one truck maker, Renschler also delivered a confident sidewipe at the recent takeover of Scania by VW, which could see closer ties between the Swedish truck maker and MAN. "We monitor mergers of other manufacturers with serenity," he says.
* China - Daimler awaits green light for trucks venture
Stuttgart,Germany -Reuters/The Guardian (UK) -March 10 2008: -- Daimler AG's trucks business would love to enter the high-growth Chinese market, but the laborious process of winning government approval for joint ventures is holding things up... "Unfortunately, the negotiations with the government are not as fast as the market growth," Daimler Trucks head Andreas Renschler told reporters at the official media unveiling of the third-generation Mercedes-Benz Actros heavy truck... His company has been in joint venture talks with Foton, China's largest light truckmaker, since 2003, and both sides have agreed to cooperate on medium- to heavy-duty trucks... Daimler is not the only one who will likely have to wait, since Sweden's Volvo AB is also aiming to set up a joint venture with Dongfeng to build heavy-duty trucks in China... China is extremely attractive for truckmakers since the overall market there more than doubled to 1.45 million units between 2000 and 2006, and the segment for heavy trucks grew by nearly 60 percent last year...
