Truck Charges * Australia - To hit hard
Sydney,New South Wales,Australia -AAP/The Sydney Morning Herald -March 19, 2009: -- ... A hike in truckies' fees will hit shoppers at the checkout, the Nationals have warned... But Labor says increased charges for the trucking industry will not translate into significantly higher grocery bills... The hike is part of a raft of measures including an increase in the road user charge... Essentially a fuel tax for trucks and buses, it rises from 19.63 cents-a-litre to 21 cents per litre, which would be indexed at a rate higher than the consumer price index annually, and come into effect from January 1 next year... The government argues the higher charges are justified because the trucking industry is not shouldering enough of the cost of providing road infrastructure...
