SAFETY * Canada - Feds taking a close look at stability systems

Ottawa,ONT,CAN -Today's Trucking -11 Mar 2008: -- ... Electronic Stability Control (ESC) technology helps drivers maintain control when swerving or braking to avoid an obstacle and in cornering when road conditions are slippery. While ESC is an exciting new safety feature, it does not replace driver prudence and good tire and brake maintenance... At its annual convention in November, the Ontario Trucking Association revealed a national effort is underway to persuade North American manufacturers of Class 8 tractors to voluntarily make anti-rollover technology standard equipment in their new vehicle packages... The U.S. government recently announced ESC will be mandatory on all new cars and light trucks by 2011. The Government of Canada is currently engaged in consultations to determine whether ESC should also be mandated on light duty-vehicles in this country...

* Finland - Electronic stability control systems for new HGVs from 2010. Wabco's winter testing in Finland with Biglorryblog. Brrrr...baby it's cold outside

Finland -BiglorryBlog (UK) -13 March 2008: -- WABCO has operated its own test area in Northern Finland since 1998, with the Arctic Circle test track and the region’s below-zero temperatures creating optimum conditions to test innovative braking and driving control systems. An 800-meter (875-yard) braking track allows for tests of a wide range of braking systems. Braking is tested on ice, snow or asphalt, as well as on combinations of the three surfaces. A circular skid pad, with a radius of 280 meters (306 yards), is specifically designed for electronic stability control (ESC) tests. An inclined test slope incorporating grades of 3.5 and 7% is also used for testing drive slip control systems (ASR)... “We were the first to introduce an ESC for trucks in 2001. And we have driven the development of stability controls ever since – a significant contribution to road safety”, Dr. Christian Wiehen, vice president, product development at WABCO tells BLB. ”This year’s winter tests have delivered highly valuable results for our engineers working on the next system generations”...
