FREIGHT COSTS * UK - It's still expensive to run a truck in

The UK remains one of the most expensive places in Europe to run a 40-tonne truck

London,UK -Road Transport, by Roanna Avison/Commercial Motor -11 March 2008: -- ... according to research by Nera Economic Consulting and the Freight Transport Association. Operating costs including staffing, fuel, VED and insurance were taken into account... Taking the UK's costs as an indexed figure of 100, only the Netherlands has a higher figure - 101. Italy with 98 and Germany with 97 have similar running costs, while Ireland with 93, Poland with 77 and Hungary with 76 show the huge variation across Europe... The survey also considered employment costs alone, and again the UK was given an index of 100. Germany is the most expensive with 131, followed by the Netherlands with 132 and Italy with 106. Hungary and the Czech Republic are the cheapest with 39, followed by Poland with 54... The FTA plans to take the information to the government to show how the high price of fuel among other costs is making UK hauliers less competitive than their Continental counterparts...
