Diesel prices keep on trucking * USA - Record high raises costs of most goods

It was the first time the price of any fuel has shattered the four-bucks-a-gallon mark in Silicon Valley. All-time highs for both gas and diesel are being broken daily across California and the nation

San Jose CA, USA -The San Jose Mercury News, by Gary Richards & Joshua Molina -10 Mar 2008: -- Local diesel prices hit an average of $4.01 a gallon Sunday after some South Bay fueling stations jacked up prices nearly 20 cents over the weekend... While gasoline prices have caught the attention of motorists, it's the rising price of diesel that they should be more worried about because it hammers all consumers, from big rig haulers whose incomes are being eaten up by fuel prices to hybrid car owners paying more for groceries and other supplies that truckers deliver... Nearly everyone expects fuel prices to go higher. Oil analyst Tony Kolton of LIM Technology predicts crude oil now selling around $106 a barrel could jump to the $115 to $120 range by June or July... Each $1 increase in crude means an extra 2 1/2 cents more at the pump. If Kolton is right, $4 a gallon may eventually seem like a bargain... "We don't go far on $100 at these prices," said Morehouse, head of the Morgan Hill trucking company, whose trucks average six miles or less a gallon... She has half of her equipment up for sale and is downsizing in an attempt to stay in business... "I can't just up and move," she said. "I don't want to close the doors either. So, I'm biting the bullet."... For now... (Photo by Jim Gensheimer / Mercury News - Independent truck driver Richard Thompson of Michigan takes a break at Plaza Gas and Diesel in Gilroy on Sunday.
