DANGEROUS PROFESSION * Kenya - Truckers Grapple With Insecurity And Corruption

Despite complaints of attacks on long distance truck drivers on the Mombasa-Nairobi highway, it appears their cry is falling on deaf ears

Mombasa,Kenya -AllAfrica.com (Washington,USA)/The East African Standard (Nairobi), by Willis Oketch-27 March 2008: -- ... They say the Government seems unmoved. Most of the drivers have been beaten up, killed, maimed and violently robbed of their belongings... "More than 100 drivers suffered at the hands of criminal gangs last year which showed there is a horrifying rise on the number killed before the end of last year," claims Mr John Njoroge, the Kenya Long Distance Truck Drivers Association secretary general... Mr Njoroge says there are marauding gangs along the highway who have been attacking them at night... He says the notorious spots are at Maji ya Chumvi before Voi and Man Eaters after Voi and Makindu after Mtito Andei. "We do not understand why these criminals sometimes attack us just a 100 metres away from a police road block," laments Njoroge... He blames police patrol crew along the highway of not addressing the problem...
