Protesters will blockade one of Melbourne's busiest truck routes from 8am today in a bid to highlight the freight traffic "nightmare" that will follow channel deepening

The Melbourne Truck Action Group, which will occupy the intersection of Francis Street and Williamstown Road, Yarraville, for 30 minutes this morning, says the junction is already flooded with 8000 trucks a day... The trucks use the intersection to go from Melbourne's port to the West Gate Bridge and the Western Ring Road... Residents say they have to endure diesel fumes and noise... The number of container units moving through the port is expected to increase from 2 million last year to about 7 million in 2035... The State Government did not have a plan to demonstrate how inner city roads would cope with this traffic, Mr Knight said...
