* USA - Northrop to Compete to Build Humvee Successor
New York,NY,USA -The Wall Street Journal, by August Cole -8 Jan 2007: -- Northrop Grumman Corp. is seeking a contract potentially valued at billions of dollars to build vehicles to replace the Humvees that now provide basic transportation for the Army and Marine Corps... The Los Angeles defense contractor, in its most recent move to broaden its business beyond its aerospace and naval lines, is expected to announce today that it will compete for a chance to build as many as 140,000 vehicles. Northrop is teaming up with Oshkosh Truck Corp., which has extensive experience making military trucks... * UK - Smith Electric Vehicles head to Ireland
London,UK -Commercial Motor, by Dylan Gray(London,UK) -7 January 2008: -- British manufacturer Smith Electric Vehicles has sold 100 electric vehicles to independent dealer Smith Electric Vehicles Ireland, and claims the vehicles will save at least 750,000kg of CO2 per year... Smith Electric Vehicles Ireland is a partnership between green vehicle retailer Ray Keeley and commercial vehicle importer David Mullen, MD of Avia Trucks Ireland... Mullen comments on his new range: "Electric vehicles are still perceived in some quarters as an unknown, but these vehicles are a great deal less complex than the equivalent diesel vans or trucks - there are only a handful of moving parts in an electric driveline, compared to over 1,000 in the internal combustion engine"...
