FUEL COSTS TROUBLES * USA - Truckers Caught In Diesel-Fuel Pinch

Skyrocketing Costs Force many To Hike Own Prices

New London,CT,USA -The Day, by Patricia Daddona -4 Jan 2008: -- When he started A.J. Cabral Trucking in Montville 38 years ago, diesel fuel was 12 cents a gallon... Today, with the price at $3.55 a gallon — $10,000 a week — owner Tony Cabral is feeling the pain... “Since I've been in business, it's the first time ever that my fuel costs outstrip my labor costs,” Cabral said Thursday... Lower fuel prices are the only thing that would help, he says, though that doesn't appear to be on the near horizon... Alternatives for the truckers are few, added Cabral, who has already replaced engines and tires to increase fuel efficiency. Commuters can carpool or use public transportation, but truckers have no choice, he said... “A tenth of a mile per gallon matters in this business,” Cabral said. “I just wish this would stop sooner or later. We can't take it on the chin too much longer”...
