* USA - Getting truckers 'Back on the Road'
National program seeks to help drivers
Iowa City,IN,USA -Hawk Central/Iowa City Press-Citizen,by Kathryn Fiegen -January 4, 2008: -- Question marks about the strength of the nation's economy are having a negative effect on the trucking industry, but a national program hopes to turn things around -- starting with just one person... Lane Bartram, marketing manager of Arrow Truck Sales in Kansas City, Mo., said health problems, the mortgage crisis or another emergency can sink some truckers' careers... Starting in November, Arrow began "Back on the Road 2008," a program to get one trucker back into the business by providing a truck, insurance, a warranty, financial services and even a one-year work contract with local company Heartland Express... VolvoTrucks North America, the Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association and National Truck Protection Inc., also are partners in "Back on the Road."... The winner would be a hard-worker who has a clean driving record and is down on his or her luck, financially or personally, he said... Niquette, who said he's been driving trucks since the 1970s, has seen a decrease in the number of younger drivers. "When you look around at the truck stops, all you see is old-timers like me," Niquette said with a laugh)
