* UPS Freight Sets 5.4% Rate Increase

VA,USA -Transport Topics -11 Jan 2008: -- UPS Freight, the less-than-truckload unit of UPS Inc., said Friday it would raise general rates an average of 5.4% for 2008, effective Feb. 4... The increase covers non-contractual shipments in the United States and Canada and applies to minimum charge, LTL and truckload rates, the company said... UPS said in November it would raise its general package rates for 2008 by 4.9%...


* Trucking Company Struggles To Recruit Drivers

Now they're struggling with personnel problems... The American Trucking Association reports an industry-wide shortage of qualified drivers... Tim Van de Walker puts in 80-hour weeks, he sleeps in a truck, and could probably drive to and from Devons, Massachusetts with his eyes closed... “It's long hours. And most of it, all of it, is spent behind the wheel.”... At Gypsum Express in , people like Tim are hard to come by. The company has about 400 drivers and could use 100 more...
