Experts * USA - Truckers Follow Closely To Save Gas

Driving safety experts said the I-4 pileup on Wednesday spotlights why proper spacing between vehicles, big trucks especially, can mean the difference between a fender-bender and a fatal accident

Orlando,Fla,USA -WESH 2 News /Truck Stop USA -January 10, 2008: -- Many drivers follow too closely in an effort so save gas and money... One expert said truckers are the biggest concern because if they don't give themselves enough room and time to stop, the accident they're involved in will be far worse... Professional truck driver Angel Bega said he hasn't had as much as a speeding ticket in 16 years, but he said some owner-operators under financial pressure due to high fuel costs will drive too close behind another vehicle to cut down on wind resistance and save money... It's called drafting.... According to Road Safe America, 5,000 people die each year in accidents involving large trucks and 130,000 are injured. Expert Pete Brenenstuhl said lives could be saved if truckers stopped tailgating other vehicles... A national trucking publication said that while truckers are following too close, the only thing they're watching is the tail lights of the vehicle in front of them, and they call that inattention blindness...
