CUTTING FUEL DUTY * UK Gordon Brown should boost the economy by
Here is a story that will be welcome news to hauliers
London,UK -The Road Transport Blog -14 Dec 2007: -- ... According to Maurice Fitzpatrick, a senior manager at leading business and financial advisers Grant Thornton, the Chancellor could afford to reduce fuel duty by around 7p a litre... He reckons that the Chancellor has received an additional £3.6 million from higher North Sea oil and gas prices... “Record high international oil prices combined with petrol and diesel reaching £1 at the pump is set to generate an extra £300 million per month for the UK Treasury", he says... But, he adds “the Treasury is probably more inclined to use the additional revenue to finance its increases in public spending and to reduce its borrowing, which is already overshooting its target this year"... So the Government should be able to afford to cut 7p off fuel duty but it will not do it because it has already spent too much...
