TRUCKING COSTS * Canada - Anti-terror costs take toll on transporters

Truckers bear brunt of post-9/11 increases

Ottawa,ONT,CAN -Globe and Mail, by STEVEN CHASE -November 22, 2007: -- Anti-terror security measures put in place by the U.S. and Canadian governments since 9/11 have burdened Canada's transportation industry with up to half a billion dollars in extra costs, a Transport Canada report says... And Canada's cross-border trucking sector has borne the brunt of these costs, it says... Transport Canada estimates the combined direct and indirect operating cost impact of post-9/11 security measures is $315-million to $549-million for Canadian transport sectors... Eighty-six per cent of the extra annual costs stem from the impact of U.S. government security measures. Only 14 per cent stem from Canadian government initiatives, it said...
