Reply * USA - Truckers want safer roads too

Regarding Dave Zweifel's column "Trucking lobby's toll is plain to all"... by Lane Kidd, president, Arkansas Trucking Association Inc.

Madison,WI,USA -The Capital Times -21 Nov 2007: -- ... He is correct in observing there are more semitrucks on our highways than 20, even 10, years ago. Our highways are congested. Those of us who work in the industry do not like crowded highways any more than he does... Anyway, he (D.Z.) may have inadvertently stumbled upon the solution. While he chides the industry for "longer and heavier" trucks, eventually the public must decide -- do we want more trucks on our highways or more stuff in each truck?... Those longer and heavier trucks he despises could actually be the answer if approached correctly. We could adopt rules that allow more stuff in each truck as long as we require those companies that haul more products to install additional axles under their trailers to lessen damage to the roads... We could go further to ensure safety -- measures like mandating electronic on-board recorders in all trucks, creating safeguards to ensure equipment inspections, requiring higher taxes but spending them on the highways we drive, and tightening regulations to keep drivers free of drug and alcohol abuse. Taken as a package, we could make our highways less congested and safer for everyone... Zweifel might be surprised to learn that virtually every trucking company owner wants the same things he does -- safer highways -- and ways to make it happen...
