Safety first * USA - For truck drivers
A trucking industry leader defended the safety record of tractor-trailer drivers in a discussion hosted by The Torrington Club
Torrington,CT,USA -The Torrington Register Citizen, by DAVID HUTTER -15 Nov 2007: -- ... On Wednesday, Michael J. Riley, the president of the Hartford-based Motor Transport Association of Connecticut, said that tractor-trailer drivers are safer than private drivers... The commercial truckers must obey strict local, state and federal laws governing the condition of the vehicles and also their own mental and physical health, he said... The trucking industry is facing dire challenges, such as a shortage of parking spaces along state highways and an aging work force, Riley said. "We are short about 1,200 spaces per night for our truck drivers across the highways of Connecticut," he said. "As a result, the drivers try to find space wherever they can once the rest areas are filled. This could be along the shoulder near the rest area or on the side of a McDonald's parking lot"... Many new truck drivers are women or recent immigrants to the United States, Riley said... (Photo from mycampage.com: "See America from my Big Rig Truck" - West Valley City, UT, UNITED STATES)
