Low Sulphur Fuels * UK - Must catch up over
London,UK -Commercial Motor & Road Transport, by Keith Nuthall -5 November 2007: -- The UK road transport sector has to play catch-up with many of its European Union (EU) competitors regarding the introduction of sulphur-free fuels, a report from the European Commission (EC) shows... Although the UK Petroleum Industry Association has indicated it expects Britain to switch to sulphur-free fuels by a 2009 EU deadline, in June the government admitted the issue was complicated because "the UK fuel distribution network can only accommodate a single grade of diesel", preventing small introductory sales of sulphur-free diesel... However, a new EC report shows other countries do not suffer such difficulties. Germany has switched entirely to sulphur-free fuel, with 31bn litres of petrol and 34bn litres of diesel sold in 2005. Sweden, Denmark, Finland also switched entirely to sulphur-free fuels by that year and Austria, Belgium, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Portugal, Spain, Estonia and Poland were selling both sulphur-free and low-sulphur fuels...
