London,UK -Commercial Motor & Road Transport, by Keith Nuthall -5 November 2007: --The UK road transport sector has to play catch-up with many of itsEuropean Union (EU)competitors regarding the introduction of sulphur-free fuels, a report from theEuropean Commission (EC)shows...Although theUK Petroleum Industry Associationhas indicated it expects Britain to switch to sulphur-free fuels by a 2009 EU deadline, in June the government admitted the issue was complicated because "the UK fuel distribution network can only accommodate a single grade of diesel", preventing small introductory sales of sulphur-free diesel...However, a new EC report shows other countries do not suffer such difficulties.Germanyhas switched entirely to sulphur-free fuel, with 31bn litres of petrol and 34bn litres of diesel sold in 2005.Sweden,Denmark,Finlandalso switched entirely to sulphur-free fuels by that year andAustria,Belgium,Greece,Ireland,Italy,Portugal,Spain,Estoniaand Polandwere selling both sulphur-free and low-sulphur fuels...
