The ability of UK workers to opt out of the 48-hour week is being challenged in Europe, with unions arguing that this loophole erodes workers' rights

Yet some members of the EU seem to have an insatiable appetite for tinkering with the Working Time Directive (WTD). In the latest proposal, the Portuguese presidency wants to take up where its Finnish predecessor left off by reviewing certain aspects of the policy. The key target is the opt-out facility which allows non-mobile members of staff in the road transport industry, such as fitters, traffic clerks and warehouse staff, to sign away their right to restrict their weekly hours to the 48-hour average limit... * UK - AA and GMB in drivers' hours row
London,UK -Road Transport -2 November 2007: -- A furious row has broken out between the GMB trade union and the AA over drivers' hours. Paul Maloney, GMB national officer, claims AA patrols are telling the GMB that they are being asked by the organisation to exceed the 62-mile legal limit for specialist breakdown vehicles driving without tachographs. The row centres on interpretation of the law covering the recovery industry... Specialised breakdown vehicles in excess of 3.5 tonnes are exempt from the EU drivers' hours and tachograph rules, but only if they operate within a 62-mile radius of base. The AA argues that its vehicles are under the 3.5-tonne limit and are therefore exempt from the requirement for a tachograph...
