* India - More on Eicher, on India and the World
London,UK -Road Transport (UK) -11 Oct 2005: -- It seems that the diminutive Indian OEM now has a queue of suitors... Last week, we reported AB Volvo’s apparent interest in the manufacturer and now other OEMs – both domestic and foreign – are also queuing up for a dance... In addition to AB Volvo, Daimler AG has been sniffing. It has an existing relationship with Eicher via its Fuso subsidiary... Paccar is also rumoured to have been having a look... What of the domestic players? Eicher appears to prefer a domestic as opposed to a foreign investor, and seems very reluctant to hand over a majority stake to anyone. This proved to be the dealbreaker in the negotiations between Ashok Leyland and both AB Volvo and Scania, and could well do for this one too... In sum, this situation seems to boil down to two opposing camps. Foreign OEMs looking for a route into the Indian market, and domestic OEMs looking for a means to protect the same. Increasingly, we remain uncertain as to the true value of the pot of gold at the end of the Indian rainbow; it doesn’t look quite as shiny as was once thought. Once thing looks certain though; whoever ends up with a piece of Eicher will have paid, and paid handsomely for it...
* USA - More gloom for Paccar subsidiary Kenworth
But what is happening in terms of DAF's contributions to the ailing Paccar? This is beginning to get interesting
USA -Road Transport (UK) -11 Oct 2007: -- According to Paccar’s 2006 year-end figures, overall revenue sat at $16,454.1 million. DAF NV’s numbers for the same period show revenues of €3777 million and an operating profit of €455 million. If we assume a $: € exchange rate of 1.32 – as it was on the 31st December last year when both sets of figures were published – then we can see that DAF NV contributed $4985.64 million – or a touch over 30 per cent - to Paccar’s overall revenues... This means that DAF NV’s contributions to the 2007 figures will be even more prominent... Given that Paccar’s business in the US is at best flat at present, it seems likely that DAF NV contribution will be closer to at least 40 per cent of total revenues... All well and good, but what happens if the European market slides next year? We cannot see the US market coming back in 2008 – truck demand is predicated by overall economic health, and the US economy looks to be heading for the Sanatorium... And, if Europe goes wrong, then Paccar goes very wrong. Will Europe go wrong? We’re beginning to wonder if this particular party is in its final stages...
