* CHP truck checks along 118 find many in non-compliance

Camarillo,CA,USA -The Ventura County Star, by Anna Bakalis -October 23, 2007: -- The California Highway Patrol conducted a concentrated truck enforcement effort along Highway 118, from Moorpark's city limits to Somis, on Saturday and found many vehicles were not following all CHP regulations... Of the 34 inspections, only six trucks were in full compliance, said Sgt. Alex Carillo with the CHP's Coastal Division unit, which is based in San Luis Obispo... Carillo said eight vehicles were taken out of service for being in an unsafe mechanical condition, while 61 violations were noted and 15 citations were given. One driver was taken off the road... * Port Security Measures Raise Ire of Local Truck Drivers


Oakland,CAL,USA -KCBS, by Chris Filippi -23 Oct 2007: -- The latest effort to protect America's ports from a terrorist attack is causing a stir among local truck drivers... Starting next month all employees who enter secure areas of the Port of Oakland will need a Transportation Worker Identification Credential, or TWIC... While some drivers said they welcome the program, other are worried it could lead to discrimination by the government. Bishara Costandi, who recruits former inmates for trucking jobs, had quite a different view. "What is this? What is democracy here? Then they use terms like security. It is so elastic," he said...






* New California hazmat hauler law requires inspections every two years


CAL,USA -Land Line Magazine -October 22, 2007: -- Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger signed a bill into law in California intended to improve the safety of trucks hauling hazardous materials and fuel... The new law, previously AB1612, requires hazmat haulers whose trucks are base plated in California to submit to physical inspections every two years. It takes effect Jan. 1, 2008... The California Highway Patrol will be responsible for carrying out the inspections...
