According to the PennDOT, in a November 2006 report, the bipartisan Transportation Funding and Reform Commission recommended an annual investment of $1.7 billion a year to meet transportation needs for the Keystone State. Even at that level, the commission projected it would take 17 years to cut the percentage of structurally deficient bridges in Pennsylvania from 24 percent to the national average of approximately 11 percent... Pennsylvania has more than 6,000 structurally deficient bridges, the most of any state in the nation, and nearly 9,000 miles of highways in poor condition. PennDOT estimates the cost of repairing all of the structurally deficient bridges on the state system at approximately $11 billion... * FHWA must improve bridge oversight
USA -eTrucker -25 Sept 2007: -- The Federal Highway Administration can do more in the short term to improve oversight of structurally deficient bridges, the Department of Transportation's Inspector General told a Senate committee Sept. 20... Calvin Scovel, in testimony before the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works, highlighted bridge inspections and funding for bridge rehabilitation and replacement as significant challenges for DOT. Scovel made observations on FHWA's actions to address prior OIG recommendations regarding improving its oversight of structurally deficient bridges, and outlined actions that can be taken immediately to strengthen FHWA's oversight...
