* The Growth of the Trucking Industry
USA -Career Advice, by Randy Nichols -August 24, 2007: -- If you are looking for a career change with competitive pay, consider a truck driving job with a trucking company such as Swift Transportation, Inc. With a Swift trucking job, you can generally pick and choose the areas you want to work in, whether from coast to coast or more of a regional job (e.g. New England). You also get to pick your hours and get to be your own boss, without the restrictions of a traditional desk job... The gap between the number of available truck drivers and the demand for their services is rapidly growing bigger. Trucking companies are offering competitive wages, benefits, and flexible schedules in order to attract a new generation of drivers. A number of companies are also offering incentives such as signing bonuses and free CDL training. Experienced drivers are being lured by lucrative paychecks and more flexible schedules, allowing them to be home more. Those interested in team driving (such as husband and wife drivers) are often paid double since they theoretically can deliver products quicker than just one driver... With very few exceptions, nearly every product we have was transferred on a truck at some point. Many products that are made from multiple ingredients were hauled on a truck more than once before becoming an end product. Trucks are the visible proof of the U.S. economy at work... The trucking industry is rapidly growing as well. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics web site, the trucking industry is strong and expanding, expecting a 22% growth in jobs between 2000 and 2010. Swift Trucking Does Not Ensure the Compliance and Suitability of its Drivers.
This makes the highways less safe. There is currently a big hullaballou about Mexican trucks and truckers being allowed into the USA and the safety issues it will present, but the problem already exists.
I know for a fact that Swift does not comply with federal regulations concerning standards for drivers, hours on the road, etc. They hire illegal immigrants and people who do not have high school diplomas.
Just as an example, Rodney Brian Call does not have a GED or high school diploma and has worked as a driver for Swift as a long-haul truck driver for 7 years. It was brought to their attention and they did nothing.
All this Hoopla about stricter truck legislature to eliminate driver fatigue. I don't see one word of support to increase the number of truck stops and rest stops for tractor trailers. JUST BASH THE DRIVERS INTO NON EXISTENCE AND THE PROBLEM DISAPPEARS ??? NOT !!!
You want freight in your town ? Allow truck stops WITH idling. We will not freeze or boil to death for you !!!
You want less accidents ? Teach all four wheelers how to and how not to drive around trucks. How to
merge into and exit highways, etc..., etc...
Real working solutions exist, get the money out of the scumbag politician's pockets and implement
them all.
Having a GED should be enough to drive a truck lol
