* Con-way will acquire truckload carrier Contract Freighters Inc.
San Mateo,Cal, & Joplin,Mo,USA -The Trucker -16 July 2007: -- Con-way said today it will acquire privately held truckload carrier Contract Freighters Inc. (CFI) in a $750 million deal... Founded in 1951, CFI operates over 2,600 tractors and more than 7,000 trailers, with more than 3,000 employees including approximately 2,500 drivers who serve customers throughout North America, according to the news release announcing the agreement...

* Analysts Split On J.B. Hunt Transport's Future
Springdale,AR,USA -The Springdale Morning News, by John L. Moore -July 17, 2007: -- J.B. Hunt Transport Services Inc. is a much better trucking company than it was five years ago, but it is still a trucking company in a down cycle for trucking, said one analyst in a research report Tuesday... Other analysts, in research reports issued Tuesday, said the Lowell-based trucking company continues to snatch up intermodal business at the expense of other trucking companies and is positioned to outperform the industry... Analysts for Morgan Keegan, Stephens Inc. and Stifel Nicolaus, however, still rate the stock as outperform or buy...

* Trucking Companies Mixed
New York,NY,USA -Forbes/Associated Press -17 July 2007: -- Shares of trucking companies were mixed in trading Tuesday, as a Bear Stearns analyst said the "unexciting" second-quarter results of J.B. Hunt foreshadow similar reports from its peers... Analyst Edward Wolfe said J.B. Hunt has reduced its truck fleet to remain strong through the economic downturn, and he expects similar cuts to follow at Werner Enterprises and Heartland Express... Wolfe also expects other trucking companies to report price cuts in the second quarter, specifically at Werner, and to a lesser extent at Heartland and Knight Transportation...

* Wal-Mart Improves Fleet Fuel Efficiency 15%
Fort Collins,CO,USA -MSNBC/Environmental Leader -Jul 18 2007: -- Wal-Mart’s fleet of about 7,200 semitractor-trailer trucks is already about 15 percent more fuel efficient than it was when the company announced its environmental goals in late 2005 (25 percent improvement in three years and a 100 percent increase by 2015), reports... Cutting the average mpg by one gallon saves Wal-Mart between $35 million and $50 million a year...
