Hybrid heavy-duty trucks * USA - Can dent energy needs
By Paul L. Vikner president and CEO of Mack Trucks Inc.
Allentown,PA,USA -The Allentown Morning Call -July 12, 2007: -- Hybrid-drive passenger cars like the Toyota Prius have captured the imagination of American drivers, reflecting society's increased focus on energy security and environmental protection. But imagine a hybrid system that delivers the same kind of fuel savings and reduced emissions, but can move a 64,000-pound Mack truck from a dead stop, dozens of times a day, under electric power... In January, Mack Trucks Inc. demonstrated just such a vehicle, developed in conjunction with the U.S. Air Force and our parent company, the Volvo Group. This project has persuaded us that hybrid systems can have a major impact on reducing the more than 38 billion gallons of diesel fuel the U.S. trucking industry consumes every year -- but only if our industry and government apply creative thinking to the commercialization of this technology... Mack is convinced that heavy-duty hybrids can be an important part of this country's overall effort to improve our energy security and reduce emissions. Thanks in large part to the support of the Air Force and Congress, we've already met many of the challenges involved in turning the hybrid concept into a reality in heavy-duty trucks. With a reasonable amount of governmental assistance, we can ensure that these cleaner, quieter, fuel-efficient vehicles become significant contributors to the prosperity of our customers and our country in the future...
