Opinions vary on effectiveness of province's plan to restrict speed of trucks on highways

Niagara Falls,Ontario,Canada -The Niagara Falls Review, by TONY RICCIUTO -July 05, 2007: -- John Rose isn't convinced the province's plan to institute speed limiters on transport trucks will save any fuel or lives ... and he's willing to put his money where his mouth is... Rose, who has been a truck driver for 23 years and works for Fair Link Transport Inc., in Toronto, said he'd be willing to bet a paycheque that he's right... Cornwall,Ontario,Canada -The Standard Freeholder, by Terri Saunders -July 04, 2007: -- Truck drivers say the use of mandatory speed limiters in their vehicles is a good idea both from an environmental and safety point of view... Ontario Transportation Minister Donna Cansfield has announced plans to require all large commercial vehicles to be equipped with microchips which can set a truck's top speed. Under the new regulations, trucks would not be capable of travelling faster than 105 km/h... When Cansfield announced the pending legislation this past spring, organizations and agencies which represent truckers suggested the move would not only improve safety but have a positive impact on the environment...

Sudbury Star - Sudbury,Ontario,Canada July 05, 2007: -- It is rare that government action is welcomed so universally - well, almost universally - as has been the case with the province's move to place speed limiters on big transport trucks. Ontario Transportation Minister Donna Cansfield is introducing new rules that will ensure large commercial trucks weighing at least 12,000 kilograms use electronic devices - some call them governors - to limit their top speed to 105 km/h... Limiters, which are common in Europe, have had a good deal of success managing traffic flow, she said... Ontario would be the first jurisdiction in North America to force trucks to have limiters...
