Drivers Endangering Lives * Australia - Trucking plea fails

Brisbane,Ayustralia -Courier Mail (Aust), by Tony Keim -Feb 07, 2007: -- A Brisbane trucking firm yesterday lost an 11th-hour bid to have a court dismiss more than 1000 charges relating to drivers endangering lives on Queensland roads by illegally exceeding maximum hours... Lawyers for Harker Transport made an application in the Holland Park Magistrate's Court to quash charges against the company, directors and executive staff... Harker Transport and its senior staff were charged after an extensive two-year cross-agency investigation... The number of charges is by far the largest to be laid under tough chain-of-responsibility laws... Harker was initially investigated after one of its drivers, David Fliedner, of Cowra in NSW, was sentenced in December 2001 for dangerous driving causing death... He had fallen asleep at the wheel and crashed into a car stopped at a temporary traffic control near Mackay in December 2000, killing British doctors Scott Wilson and Catriona Maher...
